Pockels cells are based on crystalline, optically non-linear materials, which can be used to create optical anisotropy with externally modulatable electric fields. Depending on the Pockels cell’s design and orientation toward the laser beam and laser polarization, very fast intensity modulators, intensity switches, frequency shifters, phase shifters, deflectors, polarization switches or polarization rotators can be built based on the birefringence created.
